Linux for PowerMac has matured to a very solid system.
Now it's glibc-based and we've included both the new egcs compiler and GNU's stock gcc. The kernels and programs on this CD have been recompiled with the optimizing egcs for a significant performance increase.

The MkLinux kernel development is overseen by Apple Computer, who determined that the best way to port Linux to PowerMacs would be to run it on the Mach microkernel. Apple is going to base its new operating systems on Mach so this is a bit of a glimpse into the future. The kernel even supports symmetric multiprocessing (SMP). MkLinux runs on most PowerMacs including pre-PCI machines.
The monolithic kernel for Power Macintosh is a lean-and-mean kernel tuned for the ultimate in performance. Its development is led by Paul Mackerras of Australian National University and sees participation from developers across the planet. It is closer to the bleeding edge of Linux development (based on Linux 2.1) and includes some additional features (e.g. floppy support). It runs on most PCI Macintoshes.
