Description (Back)

This new release of the GNU software archives from prep.ai.mit.edu contains over 230 programs for your UNIX computer. Not only do you get over 250 Megs of source code, but you also get precompiled binaries for both SunOS 4.1.3 and Solaris 2.3. These binaries will allow you to use most of the software straight off the disk and save yourself both disk space and compiling time.

The GNU utilities pride themselves on being portable, and thus you will encounter them where ever you go in today's computing world. Because they come with source code, people have ported them to almost all environments, from the PC to the super-computers. Once you have familiarized yourself with these tools, you should be able to operate in almost any UNIX environment.

You get a full complement of development tools, including the world's best text editor, emacs, a production C and C++ compiler, GCC, and a host of other tools. The industry standard Emacs text editor (v. 19.25 and 18.59) will increase your programming speed with its knowledge of different programming languages. It's written by programmers for programmers. As a C developer, you own the GCC C and C++ compiler (v. 2.5.8), the C++ tools, such as GAS, the GNU assembler (v. 2.3), and the Gnu linker (v. 2.4). You'll also get other languages including C utilities, Perl 4.096, fast becoming the industry standerd scripting language, and smalltalk (v. 1.1.1), GNU has some recreational programs, including GNU chess (v. 4.0.pl70), GNU go, and GNU Shogi (v. 1.1p02).

All of these packages come complete with full source code, installation and compilation instructions, and user documentation. In addition to the full releases, the larger packages have patches that can be applied to an existing distribution to bring it up the current release. No need to lose all those customizations you may have made! With this disk, you can bring any bare bones system up to a working machine in no time.

You can use most of the software ready-to-run from the disc and save disk space and compiling time. GNU utilities pride themselves on portability and you'll meet them whereever you go. Once you know these tools, you'll be comfortable in any UNIX environment.

Emacs is the industry standard Emacs text editor. You get two versions, 18.59 and 19.30, both of which will increase your programming speed with its awareness of programming languages. As a C developer, you'll use the GCC C and C++ compiler (2.7.2), the C++ library (2.7.1), the debugger gdb (4.15.1), and many other tools.

Perl is becoming the world's most popular scripting language and you get two versions, stable 4.036 and up-to-the-minute 5.001m. For fun, try GNU chess (4.0.pl75), GNU go (1.2), and GNU shogi.

MSDOS users get the DJGPP suite, featuring a great 32 Bit C & C++ compiler (v. 2.6.3). You also get libraries for graphics, async, BCC to GRX conversions, and task switching. Complete sources to libraries and compilers. f2c Fortran to C converter, GDB debugger (v. 4.12), make (v. 3.71), and sed (v. 1.18).

Everything comes with source and documentation. You get patches for larger packages that you can apply to an existing setup to bring it up to the current release. You won't lose any customizations you have made!

With this disk, you can bring any barebones system up to a professional working environment.
